Taihape

Because of its central position between Auckland and
Wellington on SH1, Taihape has long been a popular refreshment stop for visitors. In fact, in spite of only having a population of around 2,500 there are some 16 restaurants and takeaways in town! The range of accommodation is almost as impressive, with prices ranging from medium to low budget.

Apart from eating and sleeping, Taihape offers visitors prepared to stay a few days outdoor activities and sightseeing away from the main tourist trail. A major attraction is Titoki Point Garden and Nursery to the north-west of town which has been acclaimed as one of the finest private gardens in the country. Rongoiti Garden, which lies to the west, is also of interest with its bush walks and native birds.

A good address for outdoor enthusiasts is River Valley Ventures. They organise horse treks, canoe safaris and white water rafting on the scenic Rangitikei River. Hunting and tramping is possible in the nearby Kaimanawa and Ruahine forest parks.
