Penguin Place
From the albatross colony follow the signs to get to Penguin Place, a privately run conservation reserve. The best chance of viewing the yellow-eyed penguins that breed here is during the last few hours of daylight when the birds come ashore to their nests. Apart from the penguins it is also possible to see a fur seal colony.
Penguin tour
Tours of the penguin colony start from McGrouther’s Farm, at Penguin Place, on a daily basis throughout the season (October to August). A longer tour (8 hours) also includes a visit to the ornithological section of Otago Museum, the albatross colony and other points of related interest around the peninsula. It starts from and can be booked through, the Dunedin Visitor Centre. Participants may be interested to know that the penguin reserve is funded entirely through profits gained from these tours.
