Duntroon

Worth a brief stop if traveling on SH1 from Oamaru to Christchurch, is the small settlement of Duntroon. In town the historic blacksmith shop can be visited whereas a short distance outside town, in the direction of Kurow, there are some Maori rock drawings to be seen. Signposted from the main road the Takiroa Rock Drawings were probably executed by pre-European Maori between 1000 and 1500 AD.

Another 12 miles (20km) away, Kurow is the starting point for jet boat trips on the Waitaki River.
