Shag Point

Like Taiaroa Head and Penguin Place on the Otago Peninsula, Shag Point, just over 5 miles (8km) north of Palmerston, is a great place for anybody interested in wildlife. Though aptly named for the hundreds of shags that perch on the rocky islets off-shore, it is the large colony of fur seals and a small yellow-eyed penguin colony that attract most visitors here. It is possible to venture quite close to the fur seals while they bask on the rocks but visitors should not attempt to get close views of the penguins as they are easily disturbed.
