The Experience

Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois Basel

As one of the oldest grand hotels in Europe and still the only one in the area, the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois remains loyal to the traditions of a grand hotel. The first official record of the “Three Kings” as a guest house dates back to 1681; in 1844, it was completely rebuilt as a grand hotel. The hotel has a wealth of history. On the list of famous personalities who have lodged at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois you will find names such as Emperor Joseph II., Napoleon Bonaparte, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Hans Christian Andersen, Theodor Herzl und many other famous personalities.  Experience the elegance and charm of a historic Grand Hotel. Fully renovated between 2004 and 2006, Les Trois Rois offers all the fine facilities expected by today’s discerning guest. The hotel’s privileged position in the centre of Basel’s beautiful Old Town and on the banks of the Rhine makes every stay an occasion to remember.

Accommodations: Les Trois Rois turns the “Tales from 101 Nights” into reality. We have 101 rooms and suites for you – select the one which is best suited to your requirements. Each room and each suite is individual, furnished with flair and with its own captivating colour scheme.  All rooms and suites are designed in neo-classic or art-deco style and furnished with antique furniture and works of art. Standard fittings include a Bang & Olufsen flat screen television with satellite TV, Bang & Olufsen DVD/CD player, complimentary Internet access (LAN or WLAN), direct-dial telephone, fax connection, safe and minibar with free soft drinks and snacks.

Herzl Room: In the Herzl Room you take in a breath of world history. This room is where Theodor Herzl laid the foundation for the State of Israel in 1897. Over one hundred years later, this simple yet stylish Junior Room will still have an inspiring effect on you.

Napoleon Suite: Napoleon never actually spent a night here – but this suite recalls his state dinner in the old inn in 1797. Artistic paintings and ceiling and wall stuccos transport you back to the Napoleonic era – especially in the corner salon with its painted relief medallions and gold-plated ornamentation.

Dining: Dine in classic style and let us tempt you with creations in the tradition of Mediterranean haute cuisine to which Michelin has awarded 2 stars and Gault Millau 19 points.  Head Chef Peter Knogl has been rewarded by Gault Millau “Chef of the Year 2011 and 2015”. On the wine list you will find a rich selection of wines with an impeccable pedigree, in particular the Chateau Cheval Blanc after which the restaurant is named.  In summer, enjoy the Rhine terrace.

Chez Donati is a piece of Italy – yet only a few steps away from Les Trois Rois.  For fifty years, the restaurant has been Basel’s embodiment of Piedmont culinary culture, a popular artists’ rendezvous and famous far and wide for its fine fare, Murano chandeliers and contemporary art.  As well as classic fare on our main menu card, we also serve regularly changing seasonal dishes.

Spice up everyday life with a dash of savoir vivre at the “Brasserie”.  The pleasantly relaxed atmosphere together with the traditional French and Swiss brasserie specialties make this restaurant an all-day favorite.  The menu is varied and offers something for every palate.  Those in the know enjoy the generous breakfast buffet from 6 am and the splendid view of the Rhine.  Every Sunday lunchtime, why not treat yourself to the legendary Sunday buffet brunch.

The Les Trois Bar is the perfect meeting place.  Time passes in an instant over an exquisite cocktail, a delicious snack or a fragrant cigar from the humidor.  The terrace overlooking the River Rhine or the crackling open fire both make a superb setting for an entertaining tete-a-tete.  Connoisseurs enjoy our typically English Afternoon Tea.

Salon du Cigar: The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois pursues its tradition of great hospitality with a new lounge of exception. The new Salon du Cigare is the perfect place to enjoy your cigar with a beautiful view of the River Rhine.

We offer a wide choice of cigars, ranging from classics from Cuba and the Dominican Republic to largely unknown cigar brands from countries not usually considered the source of good cigars. Along with the tobaccos, the bar will offer a carefully chosen selection of wines

and spirits. In addition to excellent single malts and rums, top-quality wines by the glass will be on offer.

A sophisticated electronic Ipad concept will enable guests not only to read the newspaper but also find out in detail about the cigars available in the salon.

Wellbeing: Take time to relax and unwind with a soothing massage. Discover a haven of peace and harmony to balance out the hectic pace of daily life. Our fitness room has the latest equipment (Kinesis® Technogym) for a training session – and the views of the Rhine will also increase your pulse rate!

Banquets and Conferences: Celebrations with friends or discussions with business associates:  the “Salle Belle Epoque” ballroom and the seven well-appointed conference rooms, the unique location of the grand hotel and exclusive service from start to finish will make every event a success.  Generous window frontage allows for large amounts of natural light in these beautifully furnished rooms.  Each conference room is air-conditioned and offers the latest in multimedia technology.

Destination: Nestled in the Three Countries Corner of Germany, France and Switzerland, Basel is a city full of surprises located on both banks of the busy river Rhine. Even the beautiful nearby regions can be reached in next to no time: the Black Forest and the French Alsace are all conveniently close by. Only 15 minutes away from Basel international Euroairport (BSL) and 1 hour from Zurich International Airport (ZRH), the city is unique and inspiring: proverbial Swiss quality meets a multicultural population here in the area bordering France and Germany. This makes the city unmistakably open-minded, happy and innovative.

The Old Town of Basel, one of the best maintained and most beautiful old towns of Europe, is much more than a beautiful backdrop. It is the heart of the city, where history can be sensed all around. Many contemporary buildings by world-renowned architects, such as Herzog & de Meuron, Frank O. Gehry, Mario Botta, Renzo Piano and others, prove that the tradition-conscious city also loves the new, and present interplay between the exciting image of a tolerant international metropolis and the venerable Old Town.

Note that children age 16 and older are charged the adult rate. Minimum night stay requirements may apply.
