Island of Eua Vacation and Island of Eua Luxury Travel Package

The 33-square mile (87 sq km) island of `Eua, located 12 miles (20 km) southwest of Tongatapu, is reachable by aircraft in about 10 minutes; a ferry takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on the sea. Despite being close to Tongatapu, `Eua is seldom visited; life is quiet, and there is hardly any tourism. In short, this island presents an exceptional opportunity for getting to know unspoiled Tongan life. A day tour can be a fascinating experience; this can be booked in Tongatapu, for example, at Paea Tours (see Guidepost, page 162).

In contrast to the main island, `Eua is mountainous (having an elevation of up to 1253 feet/382 m); it offers breathtaking cliffs, dolinas and limestone caves. Magnificent empty beaches invite sunbathing. Plantations and densely forested areas can be explored on foot or by pony. About 4500 people live on `Eua.

The ferry moors at `Ononua on the west coast. About 1.5 miles (3 km) to the north, the alluring `Ufilei Beach awaits the visitor (caution should be exercised here due to the dangerous currents!). A road from Houma offers the prospect of a marvelous vantage point in the northern part of the island, as well as some nice scenery along the way. The road proceeds along a forest with young sandalwood trees. At the now completely dilapidated Anokula Palace, an incomparable vista unfolds over the glittering ocean from the 394-foot (120 m) cliffs. From here, a road runs southward over mountainous terrain to the Forestry Reserve, and continues on to the airstrip.

The dense, emerald-green tropical forest is full of aromatic cedars, fern trees and a world of fantastic avian life. From the main street by Futu, in the middle of the island, an inland path leads through lush vegetation to the Forestry Reserve. At the Topuva'e 'a Maui, the highest elevated place on the island, the Soldier's Grave monument marks the grave of a New Zealand soldier from World War Two. The hike takes about 3 hours.

Further paths provide access to the eastern part of `Eua and its dolinas and limestone caves; but you will need an experienced guide. The same applies to exploration of the gigantic yet hidden cavity called Matalanga'a Maui, southeast of Ha'atua. Some skill is required to climb down into it. Legend says that Matalanga 'a Maui was created when the god Maui, in a rage over his mother, stabbed the earth with his staff and thrashed violently around with it.
