Te Ana-au Caves
A highlight of any Te Anau visit is the 2 1/2 hour excursion to Te Ana-au Caves, the ‘Caves of Rushing Water’. Though the caves were referred to in Maori legends, their exact location had long been a mystery and it was not until 1948, after a search of several years, that they were rediscovered. Located on the lake shore, at the edge of the restricted takahe area, the cave system is accessible only by boat from Te Anau. A combination of footpaths and two short boat trips through spectacular limestone caverns, leads visitors past underground waterfalls and to a glow-worm grotto.
