The Coastline of Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island is considered one of the most scenic locations in the world. Historical site abound and maritime history buffs will be delighted by all the great museums full of nautical painting, prints and artifacts. The seafood is spectacular! New England lobster is a gourmets delight and popular in great restaurants all along the coast. Clams, especially fried, are found in clam shacks along the highways. The region, extending from southwestern Connecticut to northeastern Maine, is dotted with offshore islands, lakes, ponds, forested hills, swamps, and nice sandy beaches.
Inland New England has the Appalachian that run through Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine. The White Mountains of New Hampshire has some of the finest hiking in the Mount Washington area at 1,917 m (6,288 ft), is the highest peak in the northeast. The Green Mountains of Vermont's, which become the Berkshire Hills in western Massachusetts, are smaller than the White Mountains but are beautiful to visit and have many quaint villages. The Connecticut River which is the longest flows from northeastern New Hampshire for 400 miles before emptying into the Long Island Sound. Lake Champlain lies between Vermont and New York, is the biggest lake in the region. Moosehead Lake in Maine, Lake Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake in New Hampshire are wonderful recreational areas.
New England has some of the oldest and best institutions of higher learning in the United States. The first such college, Harvard, was founded in 1636 at Cambridge Massachusetts. Yale University was founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1701. Brown College in Providence, Rhode Island started in 1764 and was the first college to accept students from all religions. Dartmouth College in Hanover New Hampshire was started with the intent to educate the native indians of the area in 1706.
