Casablanca History
Many Moroccan cities have had a very turbulent past. The prosperous metropolis of Casablanca, however, can almost be said to have no history at all. The royal cities of Rabat, Marrakech, Fes and Meknes cling to memories of their pious dynasties; but "Casa" embodies a new Morocco, pulsating with life and the energy of an up-and-coming new generation.

The oldest settlement in the area now occupied by Casablanca was the Berber Anfa, mentioned by Arab historians of the 8th century. During the 14th century the tiny port of Anfa became a pirate's nest and was consequently destroyed by the Portuguese in 1468, 1515 and 1575. Following the last assault, the Portuguese erected the harbor stronghold Casa Branca, which they held against Berbers and Arabs until 1755. It wasn't until the end of the 18th century that Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah re-established a Moslem town here, albeit one in which Europeans were still permitted to own factories and export wool and grain. The Portuguese word Casa Branca became the Arabic Dar El Beida (White House); in the Spanish translation it finally ended up as Casa Blanca.

When the French announced in 1912 that Casablanca thenceforth be considered Morocco's main port, the population increased dramatically: from 25,000 in 1912, to 1 million in 1960. Estimates for 1992 range from 3 to 5 million, as hundreds migrate daily from underdeveloped rural areas to crowd the bidonvilles, literally "tin-can towns", implying slums made up of shoddy huts.
