Central High Atlas Culture

The western half of the High Atlas, as far as the Dades Gorges, is the traditional settlement region of the Shluh Berbers, who speak a tongue called tashelhite. These hardy, tenacious mountain farmers cultivate the river oases, but they also keep herds of sheep that are lead up to the high pastures by the village shepherds in the summer. There, the Shluh herdsmen usually spend their nights in an azib (simple hut). In contrast, the Beraber tribes further east, distinguished by their tamazirt dialect, are confirmed khaima (tent) dwellers, though today mostly only in the summer. After the spring planting these semi-nomadic tribes leave their oasis villages. Entire families then make for the high-altitude pastures between Jebel Azourki and Jebel Ayachi with their herds, tents and carpet looms.
