When seen by motorists, the Central High Atlas - which has flouted them up to now - represents an immense traffic obstruction. From the Tizi n'Tich-ka Pass in the southwest it extends 300 km (180 mi) to the Talrhemt (Tagalm) Pass in the northeast. The African continent rammed against the European plate several times in the last 350 million years. As a result, the six chains of the Atlas range, running northeast, came slowly into being in the Moroccan impact zone. The Jurassic limestone of the range has been folded upward to altitudes as high as about 4,000 m (ca. 12,800 ft), covering a 100-km-wide (60 mi) region between the Middle Atlas in the north and the Jebel Saghro in the south.
