Even from a distance the brilliant glowing red barchane (sand dunes) of the Erg Chebbi are easily recognizable. At the foot of these sand mountains, which are over 100 m (320 ft) high and steep enough to go "sand-skiing" on, there are a few modest cafes (37 km/22 mi from Erfoud), on the roofs of which you can spend a romantic desert evening. The local waiters and dune-guides frequently perform a drum concert on their darbukkas until the hush of the desert and the glowing stars of night have arrived.

On a walk through this almost uncannily noiseless ocean of sand, you might also spot a few animals. The black tigerbeetles leave minute tracks behind them on the gently undulating surface. Among children of the desert, the common skink is a popular toy, which they quite aptly call the "sand-fish". These lizards have a streamlined body and smooth, shiny skin. If the reptile is released on loose sand it wriggles under the surface quick as a flash and moves along beneath the surface. The skink can close both its aural and nasal orifices. Its eyelids are transparent - it has honest-to-goodness sandglasses. The sand-fish reaches a length of up to 30 cm (1 ft), is ovoviviparous, producing eggs that hatch within the body of the mother. There are, of course, other creatures here whose credentials are not quite as good. The individual who gets a glimpse of the highly venomous horned viper and lives to tell the tale should thank his or her creator.
