Hassan Mosque Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

The embassy quarter is located in the southeastern part of the new town, right on the way from the Chellah to the Hassan Tower. As might be expected from the protectorate days, the former noble residence of General Lyautey and current French Embassy takes up the largest space in the park area between the Avenue Mohammed V and Avenue Roosevelt. The two historical figures thus honored not only had the French cornered between them in a geographical sense: in 1944 the President of the United States assured the Sultan of American support for Morocco's independence movement.

The Avenue de Fes leads directly to the Hassan Mosque. Begun in 1191, it was to be the highlight of Yacoub el Mansour's new residence. It covers an area of 25,000 sq.m (6.l acres) and holds 40,000 believers, so it might have been the greatest mosque of the Maghreb region. Due to Yacoub's untimely death in 1199, however, construction of the mosque was never completed. Its 19-nave ground plan covers a rectangular area 183 m (586 ft) in length and 139 m (445 ft) in width. No less than 16 portals were planned. A few of the 312 columns and 112 pillars in the prayer hall have been restored, along with the mihrab (prayer niche) and the kebla (prayer wall). The Hassan Tower, Rabat's landmark, was to have attained a height of some 87 m (278 ft), but at 44 m (141 ft) the masons put down their trowels forever. Its aesthetic model was the Koutoubia Minaret im Marrakech. The Mohammed V Mausoleum is situated on the southern side of the mosque ruins. Designed by a Vietnamese architect, the tomb was decorated with marble, onyx and gold-leaf. The interlacing curved patterns on the outer wall of the pavilion also adorn the Almohad minaret directly opposite. The remains of the sultan, who died as a result of an operation in 1961, were brought here in a white onyx sarcophagus on completion of the building in 1971. An aLim recites Koranic verses at the tomb throughout the day. The green (Prophet's color) pyramidal ceiling is a reminder of Mohammed V's Arabicsharifian descent.
