Kasbah of Taourirt Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

On the edge of Ouarzazate (1,160 m/3,712 ft, Sunday market) stands the feudal Kasbah of Taourirt, owned by the Pasha of Marrakech until 1956. This former citadel of the Glaoua tribe is now a museum and can be toured. The entrance through a horseshoe arch leads to the interior courtyard, the prime ornament of which is an 1884 German cannon with a rifled barrel. Its accuracy once made it a feared wonder-weapon far away, to which the heads of defeated enemies were brought as offerings! In the fortress courtyard, one can experience (on request) the ahouach, a really fascinating step-dance of Shluh Berber women accompanied by tambourines, the darbukka and large drums. In the first and second floors of the restored adobe citadel, the prayer hall, harem chamber and dining room can be viewed. From a garrison-town for the Foreign Legionnaires, Ouarzazate has risen to become Morocco's Hollywood, with the kasbah of Taourirt its most popular film backdrop. The city's youth play out their scenes on Avenue Mohammed V, where, in addition to a number of souvenir shops, there is the "sinful" supermaket of Greek Moroccan-bychoice Dimitri (his selection of wine, ham of pork, chocolates, cured meats and provisions is indeed unrivalled).
