Kenitra (407,000 inhabitants) is essentially a young town, and consequently in a historical sense not as interesting perhaps as some of the older, more traditional towns on the coast. It was established in the year of 1913 by the French, who also constructed a port there that nowadays serves the wood- and food-processing industry. It is well worthwhile to take the detour along the way to Rabat that leads to the small village of Mehdia on the estuary of the Sebou. There is a magnificent 17th-century kasbah there with a monumental portal. The Almohads had already established the port of El Mamora, at the same site in the 12th century, the name of which still survives in nearby Mamora Forest. Nearby, the popular beach resort of Mehdia Plage is situated directly on the Atlantic. Just 20 km south of here are the Jardins Exotiques de Bouknadel. This small, somewhat overgrown botanical garden was laid out by the French ecologist M. Francois in a by and large successful attempt to display the typical plant life of Africa and Asia.
