The Desert Express is Namibia's unique rail experience, offering twice weekly journeys between Windhoek, the capital of Namibia and Swakopmund, the country's premier coastal resort area.
 Designed and built in Namibia it took 18 months and 250,000 man-hours to complete construction of the train, which began operating on April 3, 1998. Reflecting unique colours and textures, this train is unmistakably born in Africa. Burnt amber upholstery, rich golden-red woods and animal motifs are just a few ways to tastefully echo the landscape through which you travel.
Desert Express consists of nine coaches that are permanently linked via a draw bar to minimize coupling and improve ride comfort.
The 24 en-suite compartments are fully air-conditioned and convert into bedrooms for the evening, sleeping up to three people (2 Adults, 1 Child). These aforementioned compartments are contained in coaches named Kokerboom, Oryx, Springbok and Meerkat. The additional coaches Stardune, Spitzkoppe and Welwitschia offer guests a unique opportunity to experience Namibia hospitality in the VIP lounge, restaurant and informal bar.

Tour Itinerary
Day 1. Swakopmund/Windhoek. Make your way to Swakopmund Station and board the Desert Express, a unique rail experience.  Depart from Swakopmund Station and travel into the desert, stopping at a siding close to the Kahn River Valley. Here you will enjoy a guided tour of the dunes and view the granite-like gneiss formations of the Khan River Valley - a barren landscape. Once back on the train watch the sun setting over the valley. Later a superb three course dinner will be served.
Day 2. Windhoek. Enjoy an early breakfast an off-train excursion to Okapuka Game Ranch, where you will be taken on a game drive. The train then continues onto the historical Windhoek Station, arriving mid-morning.
Please Note: This tour is also available in reverse from Windhoek to Swakopmund departing on a Friday.
