Itinerary
Days 1-2 Nairobi—Gateway to East Africa Acclimatize to Africa and visit the Giraffe Center and the Karen Blixen Museum. Ngong House or Karen Blixen Cottages
Days 3-4 To the Edge of the Great Rift Valley Fly across varied landscape to the edge of the Great Rift Valley, where volcanic movement 20 million years ago shaped a topography so distinctive it is visible from the moon. Visit Lake Natron, one of the only flamingo breeding habitats in Africa, named the Lake of Fire by the local Masai. Shompole or Little Shompole
Days 5-7 Samburu and Shaba National Reserves—Land of the Samburu Fly north of Nairobi to the Samburu or Shaba National Reserves. Shaba took its name from Mount Shaba, an extinct volcanic mountain that lies on the border of the reserve. Sightings of elephant, elegant gerenuk and crocodile are common along the Ewaso Nyiro River, which meanders through this arid region. Other animals commonly spotted are lion, cheetah, Grevy’s Zebra, reticulated giraffe, buffalo, oryx, gazelle, and waterbuck; birds include the famous Somali Ostrich. Day 8-9 The Hippos of Lake Naivasha From your base at Lake Naivasha, tour Lake Nakuru National Park teeming with wildlife. The great range of game includes giraffe, buffalo and chattering Colobus monkeys calling from the treetops. Over 400 species of birds can be found in the area. The large hippo population sleep the day out in the shallows of one of the few freshwater lakes in Kenya. Hippo Point or Loldia House
Days 10-12 Migration in the Masai Mara Fly to the Masai Mara in the southwestern corner of Kenya, close to the Tanzanian border. The gentle rolling grasslands and acacia woodlands of the Mara are known for their density of game, and it has become one of the best-known reserves in all of Africa. The annual migration of up to one million wildebeest and zebra to the Mara is undoubtedly one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth.
