Visit the splendid archeological site at Sabratha overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and notable for its wonderfully preserved theater. Magnificent Leptis Magna is considered to have been one of the most beautiful cities of the entire Roman Empire. Originally founded by the Phoenicians in the 10th century B. C., it became part of the new Roman province of Africa around 23 B.C. It is easy to imagine what an impressive city it was in its heyday, with its massive amphitheater, forums, baths, marketplace, storehouses, and residential districts.

Explore the architecturally significant desert ghost town of Ghadames, with its intricate labyrinthine covered narrow alleyways and courtyard homes. In this harsh environment life was lived on the roof terraces in the cool of the desert night. Take a 4-wheel landcruiser into the nearby dunes and have tea as the sun sets over this stark desert landscape.
