Tour Itinerary
Day 1: USA/Antananarivo, Madagascar Depart the USA with a connection in either Paris or Johannesburg, en route to Madagascar. In-flight
Day 2: Arrive Antananarivo • You are met in Antananarivo and transferred to your hotel. Hotel Colbert
Day 3: Antananarivo • On a city tour visit the Queen's rova. Time permitting, travel to Tsimbazaza and/or Ambohimanga. Gather for welcome cocktails, dinner and Malagasy entertainment. Hotel Colbert B, L, D
Day 4: Antananarivo/Maroantsetra • Board a private plane to Maroantsetra, a mecca for naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts. Take a boat ride to Nosy Mangabe and hike up the mountain to the hazovato. Your guide tells you about the history of these small tombs and fady, the elaborate Malagasy system of taboo. Relais du Masoala B, L, D
Day 5: Maroantsetra • You have two options today. Spend "A Day in the Life of a Malagasy Woman" or whale watch with an expert guide and search for the elusive aye aye, a strange-looking creature that lives only in Madagascar. Relais du Masoala B, L, D
Day 6: Maroantsetra/Anjajavy • Board a private plane to Anjajavy. Spend the afternoon at your hotel, but make sure to have a cup of coffee or tea at the Oasis to observe lemur travelling through on their daily feeding route. L'Hotel at Anjajavy B, L, D
Day 7: Anjajavy • Explore the nearby forest, visit the caves, watch for lemur or relax at the hotel. Then gather for a sunset cruise before dinner. L'Hotel at Anjajavy B, L, D
Day 8: Anjajavy/Morondava/Tulear/ Isalo • Fly aboard a private plane over the tsingy (sharp limestone peaks) of Beharaha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to 11 species of lemur, abundant avifauna, and more than 350 plant species. Stop briefly in Morondava for a close-up look at the baobab trees. After lunch, fly to Tulear and drive to your resort. Jardin du Roy B, L, D
Day 9: Isalo National Park • Journey to Isalo National Park. Hike to the Canyon des Singes or, for the more adventurous, to the piscine naturelle. Jardin du Roy B, L, D
Day 10: Isalo/Tana/Andasibe • Drive to Tulear through the "sapphire boom town" of Illakaka. Fly back to Tana and have a box lunch en route to Andasibe, where you visit Lemur Island. After dinner, join the local guide on a walk in search of nocturnal wildlife. Vakona Forest Lodge B, L, D
Day 11: Andasibe • Hike the forest of the Analamazaotra Special Reserve to hear and see the babakoto (Indri), Parson's chameleon, Madagascar tree boa, the blue pigeon, blue coua, the Nelicourvi weaver and the paradise flycatcher. Continue to Mantadia National Park. Tonight a local children's choir serenades you in a local wooden church. Vakona Forest Lodge B, L, D
Day 12: Andasibe/Antananarivo • Return to Tana, stopping en route at renowned naturalist Andre Peyrieras's Mandraka Nature Farm. Tonight listen to a performance of Malagasy music. Hotel Colbert B, L, D
Days 13-14: Antananarivo/USA • Today is at leisure to shop at La Digue artisan's market or enjoy a spa treatment. Later, transfer to the airport for your departure flight just after midnight. Hotel Colbert (dayroom) B, L, D B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner
