Explore Namibia's rugged and extraordinary Skeleton Coast independently, followed by a visit to the nomadic Himba people and game-viewing in Namibia's premiere wildlife park.
Tour Itinerary
Days 1 - 2 Arrive in Johannesburg and connect to your flight to Windhoek.
Day 3 Fly to Skeleton Coast Camp, passing over the striking geological features of Damaraland. Arrive in time for lunch, then take a drive through the surrounding dry riverbeds and dunes.
Days 4 - 5 Spend two days exploring this arid region, known among the Namib bushmen as "the land God made in anger" for the harshness of its climate. Sites to visit include the clay castles of the Hoarusib River, Rocky Point, seal colonies, Himba villages and more. Your guide provides an in-depth look at the specially adapted reptiles, birds, insects and plants that have evolved over the ages to survive in this seemingly inhospitable place.
Day 6 Depart by light aircraft to Serra Cafema Camp, perhaps the most remote in Southern Africa. This area is home to the nomadic Himba people, whose women protect themselves from the sun by applying a distinctive ochre balm to their skin. The Kunene River is the only permanent source of water in the region and creates a lush oasis along its banks, surrounded by rugged mountains and sand dunes.
Days 7 - 8 Enjoy nature drives in Hartmann's Valley or explore the Kunene River by boat. The more adventurous may traverse the sand dunes by ATV; alternately, take a leisurely walk in the valleys and along the waterfalls. Visit a working Himba village, or spend a full day in Marienfluss Valley, known for its "fairy circles," strange circular patches where no vegetation grows.
Days 9 - 10 Fly to Etosha, Namibia's premier wildlife park. It has great concentrations of game, especially in the dry winter months, and there are wonderful views out onto the salt pans that dominate the center of the park. Settle into Little Ongava Lodge, situated on the private 115-square-mile Ongava Game Reserve where night drives and nature walks are permitted, activities not allowed within Etosha. Species that can be seen year-round include elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe and zebra.
Day 11 Depart this morning on a shared light aircraft, transfer to Windhoek and connect to your onward flight.
