Protected within the Parc National des Volcans, the lushly forested slopes of the Virunga mountains form an appropriately dramatic setting for what is arguably the most poignant and memorable wildlife experience to be had in the wilds of Africa: gorilla tracking.

Our program starts in Kigali, the charming capital of Rwanda where you will meet your local guide and enjoy a briefing on Rwanda’s history and what to expect on your gorilla visits.

The next morning, an exhilarating climb to the gorillas’ habitat of shady bamboo forest offers fantastic views in all directions, and before long you are immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colorful birds and the chattering of the rare golden monkey. But nothing can prepare one for the impact of encountering a fully-grown Silverback Gorilla: up to three times as bulky as the average man, yet remarkably peaceful and tolerant of human visitors. The trekking is steep, and can be quite strenuous, varying in length depending on which group of gorillas you are assigned to visit.

After two mornings of gorilla visits, return to Kigali—or you may extend the trip to visit Nyungwe National Forest to see other primates such as the Angola Colobus Monkey and chimpanzee. A Golden Monkey trek in the Parc National des Volcans can also be arranged.

Day 3
Second gorilla trek, return to Kigali, Intercontinental Hotel.
