Starting in cosmopolitan Bombay, journey north to Jaipur, Agra and New Delhi, then eastward, to the holy city of Varanasi. Further east, experience the Himalayas, here you bid farewell to the Darjeeling Mail in Siliguri, and board one of the truly unique "toy trains" still functioning in the world, The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The train twists and winds its way from the plains to the hill station of Darjeeling, noted for its views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, third highest peak in the world.

Your journey ends in Calcutta, capital of India until 1911, and an experience not be missed. Its architecture and monuments are a fascinating blend of colonial and Indian.

Days 1-3

In Bombay, take a short cruise to the Elephanta Island, a World Heritage site, honoring the life of Lord Shiva. Visit Fort Bombay with its blend of Indo-Saracenic architecture, the unique outdoor laundry, and the dhobi ghats, ending with a walk through the bustling Crawford Market, Hotel Taj Lands End.

Day 4

Udaipur is known as the city of lakes. Enjoy a tour of its City Palace and Museum that stretches along Lake Pichola's shoreline. Admire the awe-inspiring beauty of the Lake Palace constructed entirely of marble, which sits on its own island in the Pichola Lake, and visiting the medieval grandeur of City Palace, Darjeeling Mail.

Day 5

Jaipur, Rajasthan Personified. Jaipur is where forts and palaces, color and pageantry all combine. Tour this renowned pink city including the Jantar Mantar observatory and the City Palace, the official residence of the Royal Family. Dinner is served in the elegant surroundings of Rambagh Palace, Darjeeling Mail.

Day 6

Delhi's Imperial City is full of vestiges of the British Raj, and grandiose tombs, including that of emperor Humayun, Darjeeling Mail.

Day 7

Visit the perfectly preserved ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri, also a Heritage site, Darjeeling Mail.

Day 8

Agra and the Taj Mahal. India's most illustrious landmark, the Taj Mahal, is probably the most extravagant monument ever built honoring love. The afternoon is spent at the Agra Fort, situated on the west bank of the River Yamuna, Darjeeling Mail.

Day 9

Varanasi, situated on the banks of the Ganges, one of the holiest places in India, Darjeeling Mail.

Days 10-12

Darjeeling. Bid farewell to the Darjeeling Mail and embark on the spectacular journey towards the famous hill station of Darjeeling either by bus or the historical Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Toy Train, Hotel Windamere, Hotel New Elgin or similar.

Day 13-14

Calcutta, the cultural capital of India, with its bustling streets and colonial architecture is truly the grandest of all of India's colonial cities, Taj Bengal Hotel.

Day 15

Farewell to India.
