The Kingdom of Cambodia is a peaceful place to visit. It has long been established that Angkor Wat, the World Heritage of Humanity, is the most attractive place you will see when you visit Cambodia, or even the world. However, there are a lot of remarkable places, both natural and historical, where tourists will be amazed by this growing country of spectacular beauty.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1. Arrive Phnom Penh. Welcome to the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia, once the most beautiful city in the Orient. A half day tour includes the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum, Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, and the Russian Market.
If you have time to spend one more day, you might want to consider visiting the notorious but very interesting Killing Fields.
Day 2. Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Siem Reap, the base for exploring the fabled temples of Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. Today there will be time for exploring Angkor Wat temples including the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat, the South Gate of Angkor Thom and the famous Bayan. BD
Day 3. In Angkor Wat. This morning you will visit the Angkor Temples at Thommanon, Chau Say, Tevoda, Ta Keo and Ta Prohm, the temple that has been left largely in it's natural state since its "rediscovery" by French explorers. Surrounded by jungle, its labyrinthe of stone hallways is overgrown with the roots and limbs of massive banyan trees, which envelop the stones like tentacles. It is one of the largest temples at Angkor, dedicated in 1186. Historians have noted its mystical charm.
This afternoon, you will visit to Preah Khan, Neak Pean, Ta Som, East Meborn and Pre Rup "The Sacred Sword", an extensive monastic complex covering over 56 hectares built by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a monastery and teaching complex. It is one of a group of temple complexes situated on a small 'Baray'. Preah Khan is the site of the World Monuments Fund "prime" Asian project a painstaking renovation whilst maintaining its mysterious allures and superb original structure.
Return to your hotel and the balance of the day is at leisure. BD
Day 4. In Angkor Wat. After breakfast at your hotel, Temples further afield beckon your inspection. Driving past rice paddy fields and a local village is Banteay Srei, "The Citadel of Women", perhaps the most beautiful of the temples in Siem Reap. Remarkable for its total restoration, this small temple built by Brahmins for human use rather than for the use by god-kings has the finest pink sandstone carving in Cambodia, clearly depicting extracts from the Ramayana. Time permitting Banteay Samre, a fine example of small scale of Angkor style architecture and hence a size that permits the visitor to closely appreciate the intricacies that are often dwarfed by the immense size of Angkor Wat. Seldom visited, you can wander through this temple at your own pace. Return to your hotel for lunch.
This afternoon, drive to a development project teaching young adults, stone carving, wood carving and lacquer application, Les Artisand d' Angkor is a heart warming reminder that progress in Cambodia can go hand in hand with traditional crafts. Then continue to Ton Le Sap Lake, the largest fresh water lake in South East Asia, is the lifeblood of the Cambodian fishing industry. The Mekong River, from as far away as Phnom Penh, reverse the direction of the Ton Le Sap river to bring an overflow of water and silt to support both rice growing and the breeding fish of many sizes and varieties. Hopping on board small shaded vessels and moving between the floating homes and small fish farms you will experience close up, daily lake life. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. BD
Day 5. Siem Reap to Your Next Destination. Transfer to the airport for your flight to your next destination. B
