DAY 1: USA or Canada/Beijing, China Depart on an overnight flight to Beijing.

DAY 3: Beijing Start your day walking through Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. After an á la carte lunch, visit Temple of Heaven and the Hongqiao Market. Tonight join fellow travellers at a welcome cocktail party and dinner. The Peninsula Beijing B L D
DAY 4: Beijing/Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia Fly to Mongolia's capital, Ulaan Baatar. Arrive at your hotel with time to relax before visiting the Natural History Museum. Mongolia welcomes you this evening at dinner, with traditional music and dance performance. Chinggis Khaan Hotel B L D
DAY 5: Ulaan Baatar/Dalanzadgad/South Gobi This morning fly to Dalanzadgad for a first taste of the Mongolian "Outback." Drive to Yolyn Am for a walk through a river gorge so deep and shaded, its floor is a permanent ice sheet. This evening, spend the night in the country's newest ger (tent) camp. DAY 6: South Gobi/Ongiin Monastery Drive across the red cliffs of Bayanzaag and on to the scrubby plains of the northern Gobi Desert. Meet nomadic camel breeders and herdsmen living as they have done for centuries, as you travel to the ruins of the ancient Ongiin Monastery. Ger Camp B L D
DAY 7: Ongiin Monastery/Karakorum
Travel northward today, reaching the sweeping steppe land that frames the Orkhan River Valley, the heartland of Mongolia. The balance of the day's drive is through the grassy plains with stops to visit with local nomad families. Ger Camp B L D
DAY 8: Karakorum/Khogno Khan This morning explore the ruins of ancient Karakorum, once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongolian empire and inspiration for Coleridges Xanadu. Continue with a visit to the Erdenezuu Monastery, Mongolia's first great center of Tantric Buddhism, which continues to be the leading religion of the nation. Ger Camp B L D
DAY 9: Khogno Khan/Ulaan Baatar Travel overland to Ulaan Baatar, stopping at the Khustain Nature Reserve (supported by the World Wildlife Foundation) to learn about the resurgence of the takhi (wild horse). Chinggis Khaan Hotel B L D
