The Silk Road evokes images of camel caravans journeying across deserts and mountains between the exotic cities of the East and Arabia, Persia and Rome. One of the world's oldest and historically important transcontinental trade routes, the Silk Road influenced the cultures of China, Central Asia and the West.

Starting at Luoyang and Xian, it reached the Yellow River at Lanzhou, then skirted westward along deserts and mountains before dividing into three routes at the oasis of Dunhuang. The Silk Road served as the conduit not only for goods but also for the transmission of knowledge and ideas between East and West.

Day 1

Arrival in Beijing, The Peninsula Hotel.

Day 2

Beijing to Dunhuang. Fly to Dunhuang. Visit Mingsha Shan the Singing Sand Mountain, and Crescent Moon Lake, The Dunhuang Silk Road Hotel.

Day 3

Dunhuang. Explore the Mogao Grottoes and the Western Thousand Buddha Caves carved into the hillside. Also visit the Dunhuang Museum, The Dunhuang Silk Road Hotel.

Day 4

Dunhuang to Jiayuguan. Travel from Dunhuang to Jiayuguan, by road. On arrival transfer to the Garden Hotel.

Day 5

Jiayuguan to Turpan. Visit to the Jiayuguan Fort. Evening transfer to the railway station for an over-night train bound for Turpan (Private Compartment).

Day 6

Early morning arrival in Turpan. Visit the Emin Minaret, the ruins of Gaochang and Jiaohe, the Astana Graves and the ancient monastery of Bezelik. Evening Uyghur Cultural show, Turpan Oasis Hotel.

Day 7

Turpan to Urumqi. Drive to Tuyog Village set against the stunning backdrop of the Flaming Mountains. Continue to Urumqi, The Sheraton Hotel.

Day 8

Urumqi. Visit the Provincial Museum with its fantastic collection of 12 mummies, some dating from 2,000 B.C. See the breathtaking Tianchi Lake (The Lake of Heaven), The Sheraton Hotel.

Day 9

Urumqi to Kashgar. Fly to Kashgar. Explore the Old Town. Make a visit to the Idkah Mosque and to the Abakh Hoja Mosque & Mausoleum, Qinibagh Hotel.

Day 10

Kashgar. Full day visit to the Sunday Market including the livestock market, Qinibagh Hotel.

Day 11

Kashgar to Urumqi to Beijing. Fly to Urumqi and connect on to Beijing, The Peninsula Hotel.

Day 12

Depart Beijing.
