One of the world’s oldest and historically important transcontinental trade routes, the Silk Road influenced the cultures of China, Central Asia and the West. Starting at Luoyang and Xian, it reached the Yellow River at Lanzhou, then skirted westward along deserts and mountains before dividing into three routes at the oasis of Dunhuang. The Silk Road served as the conduit not only for goods but also for the transmission of knowledge and ideas between east and west.

Days 1-2

Arrive Shanghai. Walk along the famous Bund, visit the Yu Gardens, Shanghai Museum and the Urban Planning Center, Four Seasons Hotel.

Days 3-4

Fly to Xian. Tour the Terracotta Warrior digs and the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, Sofitel on Renmin Square.

Days 5-7

Fly to Lanzhou, tour the Provincial Museum and visit White Pagoda Mountain, and the Bridge over the Yellow River. Overnight train to Jiayuguan, where you'll visit the end of the Great Wall, the Weijin tombs and the Fortress of Jiayuguan Pass, Jiuquan Hotel.

Days 8-9

Full day's drive brings to Dunhuang. Ride a camel up to Mingsha Hill for breakfast, watching the sunrise over the dunes. Visit the famed Mogao Caves, Dunhuang Silk Road Hotel.

Day 10

Late afternoon flight to Urumqi, Sheraton Hotel.

Days 11-12

Early morning flight to Kashi for the Sunday Bazaar. Fly back to Urumqi and visit the Provincial Museum with its mummy exhibit, Sheraton Hotel.

Days 13-15

Fly to Beijing. Tour the city's main attractions as well as the Great Wall, Raffles Hotel.

Day 16

Depart China.
