Days 1 & 2: Arrive Mumbai
Cosmopolitan and tropical, Mumbai displays a vibrant, often aggressive, temperament reflecting the affluence and energy of a bustling city of 15 million people. The most western of India’s cities, it was the main port for British India until 1947, when India gained independence. A warm salty breeze comes in off the Arabian Sea. Weathered Victorian mansions and grand public buildings stand as lingering reminders of the days of the British Raj. During your stay, you discover some of Mumbai’s many landmarks, such as the Gateway to India, an elegant stone archway erected in 1911 to welcome Queen Mary and King George V of England. Explore the terraced hanging gardens on Malabar Hill, with panoramic views of the Arabian Sea. Visit Mahatma Gandhi’s three-story home (1917-1934) and museum also on the hill. Taj Mahal (B)
