Tour Itinerary
Day 1 Welcome to Tokyo, a city unlike any other: supremely modern and culturally rich and interspersed with the beautiful, contemplative gardens for which Japan is famous.
Day 2 A full day of sightseeing in Tokyo as you choose. Some suggestions? Visit the Imperial Palace Plaza, Asakusa Temple and Meiji Jingu Shrine. View the fantastic collection of Japanese and Asian folk art at the inspiring Mingei Folkcraft Museum and shop for the latest fashions in Roppongi and along Omotesando street. Finally, sample some of the many restaurants for which Tokyo, boasting more Michelin stars than any other city in the world, is famous.
Day 3 Board the bullet train to Nagoya, in central Japan; then travel overland to the old post towns of Tsumago and Magome. These perfectly preserved towns were stops along the old Nakasendo Road, a former "highway" connecting Tokyo (formerly Edo) and Kyoto. If you wish, you may take a two-hour scenic walk between the two towns along this ancient road before returning to Nagoya.
Day 4 Journey by train through the lovely valleys of the Japan Alps to Takayama, known as "Little Kyoto," rich with traditional buildings. Stroll through the Old Town, full of beautifully preserved merchant houses, whose soaring timber frames are constructed with tongue and groove joinery. Sample regional brew at sake breweries, browse antique shops and enjoy the mountain cuisine.
Day 5 Drive to the hidden hamlets of Gokayama and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go, whose thatched roof gassho-zukuri houses are rapidly disappearing from Japan's countryside. Enjoy lunch with a local family to learn what daily life was like in the not-too-distant past, before continuing to Kanazawa.
Days 6-7 Visit Kanazawa's samurai houses, as well as Kutani pottery and gold leaf workshops. See the magnificent Kenrokuen garden, located outside the gates of Kanazawa Castle and one of the three most famous gardens in Japan.
Day 8 Transfer to the airport to board your onward flight.
