Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Takayama On arrival, walk to your nearby hotel. Meet your English-speaking guide at Hida Hotel Plaza this afternoon for a walking tour of this lovely mountain town. Isolated from the outside for centuries, Takayama has the feel of a medieval castle town. It is home to historical temples and shrines in the Higashiyama area, and a reproduction of traditional mountain farming villages at Hida Folk Village. Takayama’s spring and fall festivals are among the most beautiful in Japan. (Contact us for dates). Savor the arts and culture of traditional craftsmen and artisans while enjoying the atmosphere of the ancient city. Visit Kusakabe Folklore Museum, which dates from 1879. Originally one of the early merchant’s homes, it was the first of several historic houses designated as a National Important Cultural Treasure. Hida Hotel Plaza
Day 2: Takayama / Kanazawa Visit the busy, colorful morning markets that have been a tradition for here more than 200 years. Vendors sell rice, mulberry trees, flowers and vegetables. Drive to Kanazawa. En route, stop at Shirakawago, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its gassho-style thatched-roof houses represent a unique architectural form developed to survive severe winter weather. Then, on to Gokayama, where you see a demonstration of fine Japanese papermaking. ANA Hotel Kanazawa (B)
Day 3: Kanazawa The biggest city in the Hokuriku region, Kanazawa is another old castle town, which was ruled by the Maeda family for three centuries after the first lord Maeda entered Kanazawa Castle in 1583. Its temperate, rainy climate encouraged agricultural production of rice, sake and sweets. The Japan Alps, Hakusan National Park and Noto Peninsula National Park surround the city, and two rivers run through it. Such an exquisite natural background gives the city a relaxed feeling. Today’s sightseeing includes Kenrokuen Garden, Kutaniyaki Pottery Kiln and Nagamachi Samurai House District. The tour concludes at Kanazawa station around noon. Your afternoon is at leisure.
