This program includes Burma's most important highlights and adds a few places that are further off the beaten path. Begin with two nights in Yangon, a city whose large size (4 million people) is belies its place as one of Asia's most charming capitals, and a day trip to Bago, formerly an important seaport until a change in river course cut off access to the sea. Within easy reach of Yangon, Bago is known today for its relaxed pace, and the Shwemawdaw pagoda, which dominates the town. Next, fly to Bagan for two days of touring the spectacular ruins that date back 900 years, surely one of the most wondrous sights in Asia, before flying to Mandalay, an important cultural center and the most Burmese of the country's cities. Spend two days touring the city and the nearby ancient towns of Amarapura and Sagaing. Fly to Heho, from where you will drive to Pindaya, noted for its extensive limestone caves and picturesque scenery. Drive to Inle Lake for a two-night stay in this region of ethnic minorities and floating gardens before returning to Yangon for a final night.
