Itinerary
Day 1 Fly USA to Seoul
Day 2 Welcome to Seoul, Korea
Almost flattened during the Korean War, Seoul has risen from the ashes to become one of Asia’s great cities. As the political, financial, and cultural hub of Korea, Seoul’s busy streets are lined with boisterous nightclubs, trendy stores and budget-friendly restaurants. Yet reminders of Seoul’s patrician past still sing out beneath the high rises and 12-lane freeways. Centuries-old royal palaces, imposing gateways, and ornate pagodas provide visitors with an inside peek into Seoul’s aristocratic society, while cultural performances, folk villages, and museums remind us of the city’s rural roots.
Day 3 Seoul city tour
This morning’s city tour of Seoul visits the Gyeongbok Palace-Folk Museum, which features a traditional pagoda and three exhibition halls; Blue house; Southgate market, one of the oldest and largest markets in Seoul.
Day 4 Train from Seoul to Gyeongju
Travel by express train to Gyeongju.
For 1000 years, up until the 10th century, Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla dynasty. Nearly 1000 years later, Gyeongju is an open-air museum masquerading as a small, provincial town littered with ancient rubble. Those keen on Silla culture or archaeology will be in heaven, fossicking through the remains of temples, tombs, shrines, palaces, pleasure gardens and castles, but more ordinary folk will probably find Gyeongju only has a day's-worth of entertainment.
In the center of town, Tumuli Park is a huge walled area with 20 royal tombs, one opened in cross section. Across the road from the park, the Noseo-dong Tombs offer a chance to see more Silla burial sites, excavated in the 20th century. A few hundred meters away, Cheomseongdae looks like a pile of rocks but is actually one of the oldest observatories in East Asia. The pile of rocks is a mathematical allegory for the days and months of the year.
The crowning glory of Silla temple architecture is Bulguksa, a magnificent temple built on a series of stone terraces about 16km (10mi) from the town. The eaves and internal painting of this gorgeous temple are one of the artistic highlights of Asia. Stand on the highest level of the temple and you'll look down over a rolling sea of tiles. High above the temple, a seated Buddha gazes over Gyeongju from Seokguram Grotto.

Seoul was battered by Japanese and Manchu invasions in the 16th and 17th centuries and flattened by the Korean War; most of its cityscape is modern. Overshadowed by high-rises and 12-lane freeways, it yet retains a hidden history of centuries-old temples, palaces, pagodas and pleasure gardens.
