Approximately 55 square metres/ 592 square feet.
Deluxe Suites
Located in the River Wing, these individually designed and decorated suites echo some of the greatest figures in literature, in their names, décor and ambience. Each suite reflects accents of the author’s personality.
All feature floor to ceiling windows, a balcony, spacious sitting room, a large bathroom with separate bathtub and walk-in shower as well as a powder room off the living room; many also have a walk-in closet.
Fresh flowers and fruit are delivered to your suite daily, and you have the services of your own personal butler.
Approximately 92 square metres/985 square feet.
Kukrit Pramoj
A smoky, celadon and bronze colour scheme is the unifying force in the Kukrit Pramoj Suite. Named after the famous writer, the suite has Thai accents in the surrounding art and accessories, which are also evident in the patterning. The characteristic curve of Thai rooflines is reflected in the damask pattern of the bedspread and the hand-tufted wool carpet. Panelled walls, cornice detailing and teak floors evoke a spirit of elegance, as do the mix of antique furniture with more contemporary Asian inspired pieces, to reflected Khun Pramoj’s position and stature.
Graham Greene
The choice of colours may be obvious, but the mix is subtle. Furniture reflects Graham Greene the traveller, as he worked his way through Asia. The overall feel is colonial, with woven grass-textured wall coverings, sisal-style carpet, and a collection of regional art and artefacts. An Anglo-Indian table refers to his time spent on the Indian subcontinent, whilst linen draperies lend a casual and tropical atmosphere.
Gore Vidal
‘Sophisticated and urbane’ best describe the mink and charcoal scheme chosen for Gore Vidal. A dash of tropical flamingo pink adds spark and wit. Dark timbers and a basket weave-effect wool carpet create the background for a sophisticated collection of art and furniture; like the leather and cane lounge chair, that suits the suite as readily as any Manhattan penthouse. Chinese chairs with deco flavour add to the eclectic feel, as does the gold encrusted architectural carving, mounted on a screen behind the sofa. In the Master bedroom, a pair of contemporary Thai “Sophisticates” hang side by side, as if exchanging society chit-chat. A witty nod, perhaps, to the great raconteur himself.
Captain Anderson
In this tribute to the great sea farer, painted timber panels go from floor to ceiling to create a nautical mood. Brass campaign style furniture continues the theme, along with the light fixtures which were inspired by a ship’s wheel. Classic navy striped draperies form the main pattern of the room, and a leather tufted “Winston Churchill” sofa pays homage to the Captain’s meeting with the great leader. There is also a bar adjacent to the living room for entertaining. Accents of red enliven the suite, which is open and light like an upper deck at sea. And a collection of blue and white pottery compliments a vast collection of photographs of the Captain, his vessel “The Selandia”, and her history.
Wilbur Smith
Elegance meets Africa. Mr Smith’s history in Africa was a wonderful source of inspiration for this suite. It’s easy to imagine the great author himself arriving with artefacts in tow to pen the remaining sequences of one of his many novels. African tapestries inspire the rich and colourful hand-tufted carpets that dominate the living spaces. Sandy woven cottons with an almost Ikat nature reflect both Asian and African designs, as do the stunning collection of ink wildlife drawings.
Norman Mailer
‘Handsome’, ‘rugged’ and ‘American’ are reflected in this colourful and unpretentious suite. Classic, dark timber furniture, leather upholstery and checked silk fabrics create a New England sensibility, whilst wide striped ivory and cream walls give a seaside impression. A large Laotian ceremonial tapestry compliments a contemporary collection of Thai architectural photographs. The mood is masculine and classic.
Barbara Cartland
The Dame would have approved of her Oriental retreat. Naturally, the signature tone is a tropical, water melon pink. Combined with paler shades, oatmeal and creams, the atmosphere is as elegant and undeniably feminine as you would expect. Pink damask walls and ivory silk draperies add luxury, and form the perfect backdrop for Dame Barbara’s photo collection, that sits on a whitewashed Rococo table. There’s gold in the guest powder room and again on the coffee table, whilst an oversized peach chaise longue is an irresistible place to curl up and read one of the hundreds of her romantic novels. John Le Carre
The feel of this suite is, ‘An Englishman comes to the Tropics’, with tapestries and leather in tones of country green, saddle brown and a twist of cognac. The result is a relaxed parlour atmosphere with a hint of the Orient. Here and there, guest chairs are waiting in case guests pop in for tea. And all around is a unique art collection. The mix of oil paintings, watercolours and found objects befits an author who travelled the region, picking up clues for his latest adventure. South East Asian Writers
Elements from throughout the region come together in the SEA Write Suite. A sand and sea colour scheme gives the space a light tropical feel. A hint of gold leaf and a metal sheen remind one of the importance of gold in Asian culture from Thailand to Bali. Fabrics with Ikat inspired patterns enhance the feeling of South East Asian culture. Furniture is colonial, while rattan, cane and water hyacinth representation life in the Tropics. And as a finishing touch, there is a bronze drum displayed, a classic and much admired design icon in Asian interior design. The Jim Thompson Suite
Richly coloured Thai silks festoon this suite, named in honour of the former owner of The Oriental Hotel. Colourings are in opulent tones of bronze with smoky teak accents. Siam box plaid patterning in deep-sea blues and cinnamon mahogany create an environment in which a large, painted panel of Thai life takes centre stage. This suite is a celebration of a great man, his character and his vision. Authors’ Suites
The four suites are individually designed to reflect the Author’s distinguished personality. Fresh flowers and fruit are delivered to your suite daily, and you have the services of your own personal butler.
Approximately 100 square metres/1070 square feet.
Joseph Conrad
The worldly elegance of a curtain-draped four-poster bed, carefully selected furniture and warm, tasteful décor blend together to capture an air of gentle sophistication while the refined living room opens up to a spacious terrace overlooking the tropical gardens. This is the kind of luxury you would expect from The Oriental, Bangkok's premier suite; it honours one of our earliest and most illustrious guests.
Somerset Maugham
Deep, rich colours and ornately carved traditional four-poster beds, along with exquisitely crafted furnishings reflect the splendour and richness of Thailand that so fascinated Somerset Maugham. The ambience of opulence is matched by an elegance, highly appreciated by the playwright and novelist. Noel Coward
The suite is a pure reflection of this legendary dramatist's striking personality. Beyond the understated elegance of the arched doorway unfolds an enticing combination of style and flare. Its elegant setting provides the perfect backdrop for gentle flashes of brilliant colour. James Michener
Here is the essence of international luxury, with the soothing qualities of space and light complementing a subtly modern setting. The delicate colours produce a sense of intimacy, while the rich textures hint at the suite's grandeur. It embodies the worldliness of this well-travelled and respected novelist. The Oriental Suite
After extensive renovations, The Oriental Suite has returned in a grand manner.
The exquisite timber panel details throughout remain completely untouched, expect of course for a fresh coat of paint. Careful supplementation of the soft furnishings, as well as an extensive artwork and artefact collection embellish a colour scheme that weaves it way through the suite. Cream and citrons combine with varying shades of cobalt in the main living room. A rattan sitting area is enriched with a warm peach Kashmir carpet.
The Dining Room, in its original palatial colour scheme of taupe and mauve, is dramatised with a magnificent Oriental carpet. The Master Suite is warm and enveloping in tones of russet and apricot, accented with charcoal and pewter. An old teak wardrobe provides a simple accent to the original pineapple canopy bed. Bedroom two is fresh and relaxing, with greens and cognac accents. Two beautifully carved, gold leaf timber fragments flank the Northern Thai style armoire.
Collectively, the rooms of the suite are designed in a classic and timeless manner. The collection of art is varied, as are the accessories which bespeak the history of the suite.
Approximate size 295 square meters/3157 square feet.
The Siam Suite
Northern Thailand sets the tone for this dramatic, two-bedroom suite.
Foyer, living and dining spaces are panelled in teak to match the flooring underfoot. Louvres and a carved lotus cornice keep the suite feeling spacious. Hot magenta and hibiscus colours punctuate the teak walls, much like the flowers that dot the northern landscape. A Thai gilt patterned storage box greets the visitor at the entry, along with a celadon urn filled with fresh ginger flowers.
Once inside, a grouping of dark timber furniture retrieved from the antique warehouses of Chiang Mai, contrasts with an Oriental carpet so vibrant it almost glows. And the art collection unites contemporary Northern watercolours with older delicate pencil sketches, and photographs of temples and places of architectural interest.
Size approximately 110 square meters/1177 square feet
The Selandia Suite
Named after the famous ship, the Selandia Suite is classically decorated in hues of pale ivory against a background of hazy blues and scarlet accents.
The silk draperies pluck the scarlet from the room and mix it with spring green and light yellows. The Master bedroom in celadon is accented with gold leaf and a pair of crystal and silver bedside lamps. The adjoining bedroom suite, no less a Master on its own, pays homage to the nautical side of The Selandia. Teak floors with panelled walls and navy striped cotton draperies give this room a distinct feel, while brass cornered tables and ivory silk seating add to the mood of luxury.
A collection of photographs and engravings, of ships and world maps, make one wonder where The Selandia has sailed. A Burmese theatrical dancer’s trunk talks about a traveller of a different sort, perhaps lending a clue to the ship’s passage.
Size approximately 185 square meters/1980 square feet.
