Our problem is, we want to do it all. On our original Vietnam trip, we cover some of the country’s most beautiful and fascinating pockets. But no 10-day trip can include everything—especially such out-of-the-way wonders as Ha Long Bay, or emerging neighbours such as Laos. So call this Vietnam 2.0—or perhaps Intro to Indochina. Either way, it’s a new twist on one of our favourite parts of the world: just three stops, each entirely different from the others. First, there’s Luang Prabang, the underexplored but UNESCO-protected capital of Laos, with its neighbouring villages, Mekong vistas, and distinct cuisine and culture. Next, we fly, drive and boat until we find ourselves amid the famous limestone islands of Ha Long Bay—where we spend two nights afloat. Finally, it’s off to the great Vietnamese capital of Hanoi to bike among rice paddies and absorb history ancient and modern. Of course, we still won’t have done it all—but that’s one of the reasons we’re so crazy about travel.

Day 1
Enjoy Lao cuisine over an open-air lunch in Luang Prabang

Day 2
Pedal along the Mekong past local villages before heading to Pak Ou cave by boat & cruising back down the river to a 16thC temple

Day 3
Rise at dawn to watch 600 monks emerge from temple, then walk through the morning market

Day 4
Journey to Ha Long Bay and board a private junk to float among the spectacular island formations

Day 5
Take a bike ride on Cat Ba Island or go sea kayaking amongst secret caves

Day 6
Bike ride in Hai Duong before arriving in Hanoi in time for dinner in one of the city’s best restaurants

Day 7
Explore Hanoi’s tree-lined boulevards by cyclo & visit Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and the 1000-year-old Temple of Literature

Day 8
Ride past rice paddies near Bac Ninh and along Hanoi’s Red River dykes

Day 9
Breakfast and goodbyes in Hanoi
