Tour Itinerary

Day 1. Melbourne to Aire River.
(Walking distance: 13km walking time: 5 hours / Grade of walk: Easy)

This morning travel to Apollo Bay via Anglesea, Lorne and the Great Ocean Road. The journey will take about 3 hours. After a short stop in the seaside town of Lorne, you will transfer to the Cape Otway Lightstation, a popular picnic spot and a major trail head for the Great Ocean Walk. Your guides will make one final gear and supplies check before the walking journey begins. Enjoy a guided tour of the Lightstation precinct before the first stint of coastal walking from here to Aire River.

From a lookout, you will see the mouth of the Aire River and enjoy beautiful views back up the inlet to the Aire Valley. The flood plains of Lake Craven and Lake Costin are a stunning sanctuary for birdlife, fresh water fish and are in various stages of regeneration.

This evening enjoy time at leisure at the Aire Valley Guest House, including a relaxing dinner with the property owners. After dinner relax on the veranda of this magnificent homestead style guest house and watch the sun set over the Valley below. Aire Valley Guest House (2 nights)

Day 2. Milanesia Beach to Moonlight Head
(Walking distance: 11km walking time: 6 hours / Grade: Medium to hard)

Today experience the wilder side of the Great Ocean Walk. We start at the gate of the Otway National Park, taking a winding path that leads through forest of predominately Manna Gum and Stringybarks to beautiful Milanesia Beach.

After a gentle beach stroll, turn upwards for a short, but steep climb to the top of the ridge. Once on the saddle, you follow the contour of the hillside about 50 metres above sea level. At this point, the trail is dissected by gullies before a gradual climb, which delivers fabulous views of Milanesia.

Rough ferns and stands of remnant Eucalypts dot the path before an ascent of 138 steps. The trail continues in a westerly direction until a steep climb leads us out of the forest and onto a bald hill. Be rewarded with superb views of the coast leading back to Cape Otway; an ideal place to reflect on just how far you have come. The walk from here rises and falls many times as it parallels the coastline before cutting along the ridge behind Cape Volney, providing a breathtaking view of the western coast. Day 3. Castle Cove and the 12 Apostles
(Walking distance: 11km walking time: 5 hours Grade: Easy/Moderate)

After a hearty breakfast you bid your base farewell and make a short transfer to Castle Cove, one of the most popular surf points along the entire Great Ocean Road. This morning rejoin the Great Ocean Walk on a lovely coastal path that meanders through heath land, wildflowers and grasstrees before dropping onto Johanna beach itself. The last 2km are beach walking, with the Southern Ocean crashing only metres away from each footstep.

After lunch transfer to the Princetown to take the final 5km stroll to the 12 Apostles - those sandstone formations the Great Ocean Road is famous for, before returning to Melbourne by 6.30pm.

Note: The above itinerary is to be used as a guide only as it can vary due to weather, client preferences, trail conditions and unforseen circumstances.

Note: If travelling as a single, you can do a twin share basis. Children under 8 years are not catered for. Children 8-11 years must travel on a private touring basis with a minimum of 4 passengers - rates are on request

Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own day pack if you have a particular favourite.

Weatherproof Jacket

The use of a wind and rain proof hooded jacket is included in your tour price. An appropriate size will be issued at the beginning of the tour. These are carried year round, as the weather in Cape Otway can be unpredictable. Jackets will be collected at the end of the trip.

Climate
Victoria enjoys a temperate climate and reliable rainfall with four distinct seasons. Here is a guide to the hottest and coolest.

Summer: the average maximum temperature in south-west Victoria across January and February is 25 degrees Celsius. Sunscreen is required at all times, even on glary days, as the UV factor can be deceptive. Wind can also burn, even when the temperature appears mild. Overnight temperatures vary from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius.

Winter: June to August is the coldest time in Victoria, with average maximum temperatures of between 8 and 13 degrees Celsius.

Spring and Autumn can be anywhere in between! Expect mild days, with ocean breezes and winds. Late afternoons cool down, and evenings will require a fleece or long sleeves.

As with all coastal walking, the weather can be unpredictable at all times of the year. Being cooler makes the walking no less enjoyable. Even the wildest days lend themselves to walking this rugged coastline, giving the opportunity to appreciate how a stretch became known as the "Shipwreck Coast". The use of a weatherproof jacket is included for all our guests, and we recommend walkers thermal underwear along at all times of the year, just in case!
