The western part of the Czech Republic, Bohemia, is 20,368 square miles (52,764 sq. km). In effect, it's a land basin sloping gradually down to the Elbe, surrounded by a ring of forested hills. On the German side, these are the Bohemian Woods (Sumava), the Upper Palatinate Woods (Cesky les) the Spruce Mountains and the Ore Mountains (Krusn6 hory); on the Polish side, the highlands of Jesem'k and Beskydy. In the Giant Mountains (Krkonose) is the 5,239-foot (1,602 m) Sneska, or "Snow Peak," the highest point in the Czech Republic.
Bohemia's major rivers, the Moldau (Vitava), Beraun (Berounka) and Eger (Ohie), flow from the mountains around the edge of the plateau toward the Elbe Basin (Polabi) in the northeast, ultimately flowing into the Elbe (Labe) itself. The Elbe's source is in the Krkonose; the river flows from here in broad curves through the Elbe basin, finally leaving Bohemian territory at the eastern edge of the Erz Mountains and passing onto Saxon soil to flow through Dresden.
At the bottom of the Elbe basin, a layer of chalk underlies fertile loess soil, where farmers cultivate wheat, barley, sugarbeets, corn, hops, fodder plants, vegetables and fruit. Beneath the so-called Bohemian Massif south of the Elbe, as well as beneath the ring of mountains around Bohemia, is a layer of underground crystal. At higher altitudes, where the soil is poorer, the main crops are rye, oats, and potatoes. Beyond this, Bohemia is known for its beer (Plzen, Budweis and Prague) and for its heavy industry (in Plzen, Prague and Kladno). The region's wealth of natural resources have historically proved something of a mixed blessing; extracting them has often meant destroying the "natural" element altogether. South of the Ore Mountains are mines for uranium and silver ore; the Eger mines extract brown coal; Kladno and Plzen, pit coal. In the northwest, natural mineral springs led to the establishment of a number of world-renowned thermal baths. In the highlands, timbering is a source of revenue; although, according to a 1991 UNO report, some 75% of the woods of what was then Czechoslovakia were ill or dying. |
