Located in northern Europe between the North and Baltic Sea, Denmark is the only Scandinavian country connected to the European mainland: The southern border of the Jutland peninsula abuts Germany. Otherwise, Denmark is an island kingdom (500 in all); Copenhagen is on the largest, Sealand. By area, Denmark is the smallest nation in northern Europe: 16,630 square miles, excluding Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Here is where Europe meets Scandinavia; thus Denmark has the best of both worlds--Europe at her feet and Scandinavia at its side. The Old Kingdom--with its world-famous Viking heritage--is entering the third millennium at the crossroads of an exciting New Age.
From the smiling and gently rolling countryside to Wonderful Copenhagen--Denmark is a forward-looking and prosperous modern country, which fosters many new technologies from dot.coms to pharmaceuticals, wind power, energy conservation and recycling.
There is tremendous renewal now going on in Copenhagen. The international airport--hub of northern Europe--has a new steel-and-glass terminal to welcome visitors from abroad. The short train link from the airport to the Central Station in downtown Copenhagen is now connected to the new Øresund tunnel-and-bridge link to Malmø, Sweden, a short 35-minute trip. New this past August is the speed train from Copenhagen to Stockholm, a very comfortable 5-hour ride.
New hotels are going up at the airport and on the waterfront next to the Black Diamond--the newly opened major extension to the Royal Library. Two new Copenhagen hotels are underway with the Copenhagen Airport Hilton sceduled to open Feb. 1, 2001, to be followed by the Copenhagen Marriott in August 2001.
Shopping is great in Copenhagen. Strøget --the longest walking street in Europe--leads from the Tivoli Gardens and the Town Hall Square to the Royal Danish Theater and Nyhavn, the newly gentrified and still-colorful seaman's quarter. On Strøget, you find little boutiques and top names in silver, furs, porcelain and modern design. It's also the setting for street performers, musicians and artists at almost any time of day.
The Royal Danish Ballet and Opera run from September to June. Theaters and jazz clubs feature top international artists year around. The city's many attractions includes the Rosenborg Palace with the Crown Jewels and a variety of museums with Danish and international collections. Just a short ride out of Copenhagen you will find the magnificent Frederikborg Castle, Denmark's Museum of National History. Also Hamlet's castle at Elsinore and the Viking Museum in Roskilde.
