Tour Itinerary
DAYS 1-3: Budapest
Arrive in Budapest and transfer to the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace. Tour the Pest side of the Danube: the ornate Dohany Synagogue, the Jewish Museum and Heroes' Square, with its impressive Millennial Monument and St. Stephen's Basilica. View the Crown Jewels in the Parliament Building before crossing the Chain Bridge to Buda. Ascend Castle Hill by funicular, where the former Royal Palace gracefully towers over the Danube. Visit the Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion and Gellért Hill. Begin a music tour with stops at the Bartók Memorial House and the house of his friend and colleague Zoltan Kodaly. Continue to the Liszt Museum, the former residence of Franz Liszt. You may have the opportunity to privately tour the Opera House.
DAY 4-5: Bratislava
Journey to Esztergom, the seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church, where you visit the Basilica, Crypt and Treasury containing an impressive collection of priceless treasures. Cross the border into Slovakia and check in to the Arcadia Hotel in Bratislava. Join your local guide for sightseeing in this former capital and coronation town of Hungary. Explore the castle district and the Old Town. Your guide points out where Béla Bartók went to school, where Joseph Haydn gave his concerts and where the nine-year-old Franz Liszt first performed. Visit St. Martin's Cathedral and then listen to a private organ concert followed by a private tour of the Opera House by a former director.
DAY 6-8: Vienna
Travel to Vienna and join a local guide for a walking tour along the 19th-century Ringstrasse. Stop at the Hofburg Palace complex and the Gothic St. Stephen's Cathedral. Spend three nights at the opulent Hotel Imperial. Visit Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the Hapsburg family, and tour sites dedicated to Viennese music and composers, including the monument to Mozart and Johann Strauss. See the Mozart House, where The Marriage of Figaro was composed, and visit the composer's grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery. Then learn the Viennese waltz when you attend a dance school for an introductory lesson. A traditional "pause" follows, with coffee or sparkling wine and cake.
