Begin with three nights in Istanbul, the City of the World's Desire. Tour the main highlights of the city, before flying to Cappadocia for a two-night stay. Visit the underground cities of Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, and the villages of Goreme and Uchisar, surrounded by rock-hewn churches. Selcuk caravanserais still remain, their fine architecture and stonework examples of the region's past wealth. Also visit the carpet and pottery workshops in the region. Travel to Izmir, then on to Ephesus, the magnificently restored ancient Ionian city.
Also tour surrounding attractions such as the town of Selcuk, with its lovely mosque, St John's Basilica, the Ephesus Museum, and the Temple of Artemis, which illustrate the various cultures that have thrived in the region. Continue to Antalya, the southern Mediterranean city offering sublime beach resorts and excellent museums. Return to Istanbul for a final day at leisure before flying to Tehran. In Tehran, visit the city's finest museums before flying to Shiraz to explore the city's gardens, which have inspired some of Persia's greatest poets. The next stop is Persepolis, one of the most magnificent archaeological sites in all of Asia. Spend a day amid the awesome remains of kingdoms that flourished in what was once one of the world's most fertile, wealthy regions. Fly to Isfahan, the center of some of Persia's greatest architecture, with splendid mosques and markets. Drive to Tehran, visiting Kashan, the holy city of Qum, and the tomb of the late Ayatollah Khomeini, before concluding your trip in the capital.
