Nuremberg Places of interest Thick walls with 80 towers enclose the historical old quarter. A wealth of attractions in the old quarter bring history vividly to life – chief amongst them the medieval Kaiserburg Castle with its museum. Impressive works of art in the Gothic churches of Nuremberg's old town bear testament to the city's heyday. Visitors can admire traditional handicrafts in the Handwerkerhof craft centre.City walls and Kaiserburg Castle Kaiserburg Castle, Nuremberg's famous landmark, rises above the medieval old quarter which is encircled by a five kilometre town wall with a total of 80 towers. It sits on a sandstone ridge on the northern edge of the old town and, until the 16th century, was the setting for many imperial diets and the occasional residence of German kaisers and kings. The old quarter, with the churches of St. Lawrence and St. Sebaldus The River Pegnitz divides the old quarter into the Lorenz side and the Sebald side, where the castle is. Next to the railway station, the striking Königstor tower and the Königstor gate on the city wall provide a good starting point for a tour of the medieval timber-framed buildings, the Gothic Church of St. Lawrence with the "Angelic Salutation" by sculptor Veit Stoss or the Church of St. Sebaldus with the crucifixion group, also by Veit Stoss. The Handwerkerhof craft centre The craft centre next to Königstor gate was built in 1971 - "Dürer Year" - directly behind the Frauentor wall. History is brought to life here. The courtyard is packed with old timber-framed buildings housing a variety of craft workshops and a gingerbread bakery. Visitors can also enjoy bratwurst and a glass of wine or beer. |
