Champney's Hertfordshire Health Resort Spa, England Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages Hertfordshire, England
The Champneys philosophy addresses the whole person - mind, body and soul. Recognizing the interdependence of the physical, the mental and the spiritual, it works towards their equilibrium. A philosophy of balance; between exercise and relaxation; between traditional practice and complementary wisdom; between the conventional and the innovative.

Champneys is unique. A magnificent Rothschild Mansion within 170 acres of Hertfordshire parkland on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, we first opened our doors in 1925. Times may have changed since then but we have remained one of the world's premier destination spa health resorts with a single mission: to enhance the quality of life for our guests - mind, body and soul. Champneys is approximately 45 minutes from Heathrow Airport or 90 minutes from Gatwick Airport.

For over 75 years Champneys has pioneered a realistic approach to health and wellbeing and is today an internationally recognised authority in health, fitness, therapies, nutrition and healthy eating.
The first mention of Champneys occurs in 1307 when it was owned by Ralph de Champneys as part of the Manor of Trin
In 1874 the old house was pulled down and the present mansion built on the same site by the Valpy family. Around 1900 the Valpys sold the estate to the Rothschilds who added another wing and in the early 1900's sold it to Alexander Marc. In 1925 the naturopath Stanley Lief moved into Champneys and turned it into the 'nature cure resort', the first of its kind in Britain.

Lief was born in Latvia, brought up in South Africa and in his teens worked his passage to America to study at Macfadden's International College of Drugless Physicians in Chicago.
At Champneys, Lief soon made a name for himself as a 'daring and pioneering healer' and developed a considerable following who hailed him as the 'new Messiah' of alternative medicine.
The approach to health developed by Lief at Champneys is still very recognisable today. Indeed, Liefs embrace of holism, his recognition of the influence of stress and his insistence on a healthy diet can all be seen in today's medicine, both alternative and conventional.
Many of Liefs methods however, seem harsh today and his insistence on fasting as the basis of all cures has long been discounted.
