Tour Itinerary
Day 1:Arrive Barcelona, Spain
When you arrive at Barcelona's airport you are met by your local Guardian Angel and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax and explore on your own. The striking Hotel Arts Barcelona is located just 100 yards from the beach on the Mediterranean, overlooking Port Olimpic. Several dining options, a fitness center, business center, outdoor pool and whirlpool and a spa featuring a "Six Senses Experience" (incorporating natural elements such as sunlight and water) round out its facilities. Day 2: Barcelona
Get ready for a cooking - and tasting - treat this morning. Make a mouth-watering stop at the Mercado de la Boquería food market, one of Europe's best. Discover an amazing display of fresh fruit from around the world, as well as vegetables, ham, seafood and wild mushrooms. Purchase fresh ingredients to use in preparing your lunch during a cooking lesson at the famous Ramblas. The afternoon is at leisure before joining your guide this evening for a tour of tapas eateries. Along with paella, tapas - roughly translated as snacks or appetizers - are among Spain's greatest contributions to world dining. Tapas can either whet an appetite or be combined to make a full dinner. Visit some of the recommended establishments in the elegant Paso de Gracia district where the bars fill to bursting with locals at this time of day. Hotel Arts B, L, Tapas
Day 3: Montserrat & Bodega Jean León
Drive to the Monastery of Montserrat, a site of pilgrimages even before the Christian era. Located halfway up the steep, barren mountain peaks of the Serra de Montserrat, the monastery has a domed basilica and museum, featuring paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio and other old masters. After lunch at leisure in the Abad Cisneros restaurant of the monastery, continue to the Bodega Jean León. The chief enologist escorts you through the winery, one of the smallest and most prestigious vineyards in the Penedés and the first to grow imported French grapes. Dine tonight at Abac, one of Barcelona's newest and trendiest restaurants. The décor is elegant but minimal, and chef Xavier Pellicer "follows the seasons" to produce some original dishes in a constantly changing menu. Hotel Arts B, D
Day 4: Barcelona
A morning sightseeing tour of Barcelona with your English-speaking guide and private vehicle lets you discover the masterpieces of Catalonia's most famous architect: Gaudí. Over the course of his career, Gaudi developed a sensuous, curving, almost surreal design style that established him as the innovative leader of the Spanish Art Nouveau movement. Today you see the wave-like façade of the Casa Mila and the impressive but unfin-ished Sagrada Familia Basilica. Then enter the Parc Guell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and pass Gaudi's famous dragon fountain of multicolored tiles. Traverse a walkway supported by twisting rock pillars that seem to grow like tree trunks out of the ground - another Gaudi masterpiece. Lunch on traditional Catalan cuisine at Casa Calvet, a restaurant on the ground floor of one of Gaudi's earliest commissions, built for the Calvet family. Hotel Arts B, L
Day 5: Castillo de Milmanda
Venture into the countryside to visit Castillo de Milmanda, an attractive medieval castle now in the center of one of Catalunya's most renowned white wine vineyards. Explore the Monastery of Santes Creus and the enchanting medieval village of Monblanc. Sample a local delicacy: calçots, grilled baby onions served with different sauces. After you return to Barcelona there's some time at leisure to shop or enjoy the amenities of the hotel. Tonight's grand finale is the "tasting menu" at one of Barcelona's best restaurants, Jean Luc Figueras, in the exquisite former studio of fashion designer Balenciaga. Jean Luc Figueras produces a marvelous blend of French and Catalan cuisine with perfect modern undertones in a 20-course menu that changes every three months. Hotel Arts B, L, D
